VILA | Surface Finishing

We can turn and precision grind rotating equipment to very fine tolerances. Our grinding machinery can handle anything from small shafts up to large steel mill rolls, calendar rolls, turbine rotors and chill rolls.

In addition to the usual finishes on steel and cast iron, we can grind copper, chrome, nickel, Ni alloys, titanium Gr1…Diamond grinding of thermal sprayed coatings such as tungsten carbide and ceramics can also be undertaken.

Roll Polishing

Ultra-finished chrome rolls are typically used in the manufacture of plastic film, plastic, sheet and glass. As all the pre-grinding, inspection, coating, degassing (when required), finish grinding and polishing is done in-house, we have total control over the finished product and so guarantee consistent quality and realistic lead times.

Our in-house techniques, developed over many years, enable us to produce high quality mirror polished chrome plated rolls with surface finishes as fine as Ra < 0.01 μm – with extreme accuracy in their TIR and parallelism values.

Beside this, the optical appearance is very important. While achieving low roughness values is fundamental, also having developed the right polishing method to avoid shadows or other marks in the surface due to the polishing process is critical for some of our customers with production processes where the roll surface is very sensitive in relation to the material produced, like polycarbonate sheet and film manufacturing.

Textured Surfaces

VILA can produce a wide range of matt, SBS and textured surfaces by grit/sand blasting and various electrolytic techniques.

Using these methods, we can create a wide range of textures from fine Ra 0.3 μm to rough Ra 10 μm. In general, these finishes are used for producing plastic sheet, photographic paper, laminating and coated steel strip.
